Amanda Bossard was just out high school when she began her studies in marine biology at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage. Bossard began her commercial seafood career in 1999, when she started working aboard the ship F/V Sunset. The 65' schooner converted to an ice-fish tender was owned by Murat Aritan. He has been a commercial fishing since 1993. Bossard was married to Aritan in 1999 and the two have joined to defend their businesses. Both are advocates of preserving sustainable and renewable sources of seafood. Otolith, a wholesale direct seafood company, was established in the year 2007 by Bella Bossard (age 3), Andre Bossard (1 year old) and Bossard's mother. Bossard had returned to Philadelphia after the birth of her two children. Her husband has a long career in the fishing industry, which often keeps them separate for five months or more. It is during this time that they're focusing on their environment and financial goals. Bossard's daughter Isabella, age 12, and son Andre 10 return annually each year to Southeast Alaska to work in the position of deckhand in the wild salmon season. in a tiny 42 salmon trolling vessel using hooks and lines to catch their targeted salmon, they join Aritan during two consecutive months, selling to local processors. They also continue to grow their direct market seafood products sold through Otolith Sustainable Seafood by way of purchasing the custom processing and packaging services provided by small processors who create distinctive wild-caught seafood that reflects their dedication to quality and the natural environment.
